The Pickin' Party is on as usual at Kili Sunday, but I'll be hosting it this week with Kari Denis, and we'll be playing old-time style, with some beautiful tunes and songs. Come on down and bring some songs to learn, or sit with us and learn some new old songs. We'll have some music to work from if that makes you more comfortable and we won't be going too fast.
But there's a lot to cover between now and then! If you're still looking for something to do tonight, you've got a jam on each side of the river, as well as Hogzilla at the Rodeo Bar and gypsy jazz with Franglais in Par Slope.
Tomorrow night is the Barn Dance, plus guitarist Ross Martin is doing a show at Sound Fix, a record store in Williamsburg, with Aoife O'Donovan from Crooked Still and Krisitin Andreassen from Uncle Earl.
And then the weekend. Friday night there's a big birthday tribute to Loretta Lynn at Banjo Jim's, hosted by Amy Allison and Li'l Mo, and including a host of great local and out-of-town talent. The Pile Drivers will be at Jalopy, Miz Liz and the Vipers will be at Sunny's, and the Five Deadly Venoms at the Living Room. And the Good Coffeehouse in Park Slope features Del Rey, a fingerstyle blues guitarist from Seattle. If you want to venture further afield, the Chelsea String Band is playing a gender-free contra dance, or you can catch songs from English Music Hall courtesy Pinewoods.
Saturday night Doug Hatt celebrates his own and his band's birthday (not telling which is younger) at Banjo Jim's, as part of Eli Smith's Down Home Live. Kenny Kosek, the Cangelosi Cards and more are also on the bill so it should be a great night. Copper Kettle will be over at the Delta Grill, having headed up town from their weekly brunch at Nolita House, and Jalopy will feature the Red State Swing Band followed by Parrish Ellis and Cory Seznec. And no matter how late those shows go, you can always stop by Sunny's later on for the jam.
Michael Daves is at Jalopy on Monday and Copper Kettle is at the Parkside, and the NYC Bluegrass Slow Jam will be going on at Paddy Reilly's. Tuesday is tax day, and you can drown what few sorrows you have left at the Living Room, where the Second Fiddles are putting on an evening of blues, with Del Rey, Rich Delgrossso, Blue Harvest and more -- sounds like a great evening. And then later in the week you have the Banjo Festival at Banjo Jim's on Wednesday, and the Mandolin Festival at ... Banjo Jim's on Thursday. Renaming the bar for just one evening must have been too much work.
Next weekend, Orrin Star will be back in town at the Parkside Lounge. On Saturday, the 19th, he's doing a rhythm guitar workshop in the afternoon and a concert in the evening, with the Sultans Of String (Bill Christophersen and Russell Scholl), then doing a day of mandolin workshops on Sunday. See his site for details.
