=====================================================================
Sorry we're a day late today. But in this economy you're still ahead
of the game if you're a dollar short, so let's count our blessings.
It's the first Thursday of December so that means there will be a jam
at Freddy's tonight. It's always a mellow time, so head on down.
Tomorrow night we have a lot going on. Kari Denis and Michelle Yu are
going to old-time it up at Jalopy, with special guests including Brad
Einhorn, Joel Wennerstrom and Joe Trudeau from upstate NY. Bring your
instrument if you want to join the old-time jam afterwards.
Meanwhile, across the river, the Jones Street Boys will be playing at
the Housing Works cafe along with songwriter Susan Enan. There's a jam
after that too.
And finally, John Pinamonti will be rocking Sunny's until the wee
hours -- great songs and one of the best bands in Brooklyn, so it will
definitely be a good time.
On Saturday, the Y'all Stars play what may be their last show for a
while at Googie's, preceded by Whistling Rufus -- Emily Eagen and Trip
Henderson's new band.
Sunday afternoon a rare treat at Jalopy. Pat Conte, whose collection
of old (and often bizarre) instruments is currently hanging on the
walls there, will give a lecture about the development of the American
String Band, playing old recordings and demonstrating styles on the
exhibit instruments. Pat is a great musician and historian so this
should be a very interesting afternoon.
All the usual jams are on, and this Monday is the slow jam at Paddy
Reilly's, so get out and do some playing!
Please let us know what's going on so we can feature it here. Send
your gig notices, myspace bulletins, facebook posts and carrier
pigeons to pickin@ponkiesburg.com by Wednesday for inclusion.

All Soul’s Church
1157 Lexington Ave, (at 80 Street), New York, NY
Nowell Sing We Clear celebrates Christmas as it was known
for centuries in Britain and North America and as it
continues in many places to the present. The songs come
from an age when the midwinter season was a time for joyous
celebration and vigorous expression of older, perhaps pagan,
religious ideas. There is not always a clear line between
these and the rejoicing at the birth of Jesus bringing a
fresh light into the world at this dark midwinter time. A
special and unusual treat is the enactment of a Mummers Play
from Kentucky. Performed in the traditional manner, the
play is typical of folk dramas which survive to this day
throughout Britain and North America symbolizing and
portraying the death of the land at midwinter and its
subsequent rebirth in the spring. Performers are John
Roberts and Tony Barrand, widely known for their lively
presentations of English folk songs, and Fred Breunig and
Andy Davis, well known in New England as dance callers and
musicians.
